When exploring, a mercenary may often find the path forward blocked by a locked door, and the treasures he seeks could be hidden inside a secured chest and protected by various mechanisms. A proper adventurer must learn how to break into secure rooms and chests and how to avoid potentially deadly traps or use them against [[Enemies]].

There are currently only two types of locks:

* Generic locks - these can be opened by any lockpicking method
* Quest locks - these cannot be lockpicked in any way

==== Generic Locks ====
When you try to use a locked chest or door, they will simply not open. To unlock them, you need to have an item that allows opening of locks. There are currently two lockpicking items:

* [[Crowbar]] - The Crowbar can open both lock types and currently has a 100% chance of success. Each unlocked lock removes one [[Durability]] point from the Crowbar. Also in Rags and Riches, Crypt dungeons now have stone doors that only can be pry open with crowbar.
* [[Lockpicks]] - The Lockpicks can also open both lock types. The chance to open a lock with Lockpicks depends on your [[Lock-picking & Disarming]] stat. On a success, the Lockpicks don't spend a use. On a failure, the Lockpicks spend one use.

There are currently 3 quest locks:

* Contract spawns where you have to rescue a kidnapped NPC, they are locked inside a prison cell. Currently, the prison door cannot be lockpicked and you have to find the [[Cell Key]] instead.

=== Bashing Locks ===
You may choose to attack a locked object instead, using the [[Combat#Attack Mode|Attack Mode]]. Destroying a door will simply open the path, but if you destroy a chest, you will lose the items contained inside. This is because the loot inside of a chest is randomly generated when you first open the chest. By destroying it, the loot never generates.

An exception to this are several [[Quest Items]] required to fulfill certain [[Contracts]]. Since Quest Items are automatically placed inside of a specific chest (typically the one located in the boss room), if you destroy the chest in the boss room, you only lose the random extra loot, but it will still drop the Quest Item.

== Traps ==
Some areas can generate Traps - hazards that can have various effects if triggered. Players are first taught about Traps in the game's [[Prologue]]. In addition to that, certain enemies also carry tools that allow them to entrap the player.

All randomly generated traps start invisible and the player needs to reveal them to interact with them. Detection can happen automatically each turn the player moves. Alternatively, the [[Examine Surroundings]] skill can be used, which also increases the chance of discovering traps. If the player manages to step on a trap before revealing it, it will be automatically revealed and its effect triggered immediately. All randomly generated traps are always generated in their armed state. If you find a trap that was already disarmed, it means that an unlucky Enemy triggered the trap.

Arming Traps require the user to set them up before the trap can function. Setting up a trap takes a turn. After being set up, they remain on the tile and only trigger when something enters the tile. ==Main Quest==
Main quests track your progress through the game's story. Your character starts the game with the main quest already active. There are currently two main quests in the Early Access version of the game.

[[Escape the Dungeon]] is the main quest for the [[Prologue]].

[[Gathering the Caravan]] is the main quest for the story for the [[Adventure Mode]].

==Contracts==
Village Contracts are the "official business" type of quests.

* They are always tied to a specific village or town and only provided by the village elder.
* Village Contracts have a time limit in which you have to complete it.
* If you fail to complete the contract in the time limit, the contract is voided, you get no rewards and you lose some [[Reputation]] with the village.
* Contracts must be turned in to the village elder who issued it after completion.
* Completing a contract raises your Reputation with the village and always comes with a fixed reward in [[Crowns]].

The objective may require you free a captive person, bring back a stolen item, or simply clear out a [[Dungeon]]. Sometimes you will be required to bring a proof of your deed.

===Contract Mechanics===
Offered contracts are randomly selected from a list of possible Contracts each reset. Each contract is tied to a dungeon and will reset every 4 in-game days. Each elder have up to 3 contracts one after another. One of each type of [[Enemies|enemy]] factions/dungeon

Each contract is tied to a specific Dungeon on the map. When you set a contract as your active quest, the Dungeon in question will become marked with a small red X on your [[Local Map]]. Until you complete a contract by turning it in to the village elder, you can enter the Dungeon as many times as you want. Completing the contract will seal the respective dungeon's entrance, so you will be unable to enter until the reset.

==Tasks==
Individual NPCs might offer you quests specific to their own life.

* The rewards for these requests can vary, from [[Crowns]] to [[Consumables]] and other items.
* Tasks have no time limit.
* Completing Tasks raises your Reputation with the Quest Giver's respective town or village.

===Task Mechanics===
Offered tasks are always the same. All tasks can only be completed once.

* When you select a task as your active quest, no marker will be displayed on your map.
* When you accept the Troll Hunt task, the [[Signal Tower]] Point of Interest will be permanently marked on your map until you complete it, even if you don't have Troll Hunt selected as your active quest.
* Some tasks might require finding items that can be only acquired as random drops, therefore completing some tasks might take a long time.

When applying her Curses, the Witch vanishes laughing.

If an item is already cursed, the Curse will be overwritten by a new one. The items that got cursed will have their rarity randomly change to {{c|Uncommon}} or {{c|Rare}} and their previous enchantments will be overwritten with new ones. Attacking the Witch does not affect the Character's [[reputation]] in any location.

==Tips & Tricks==
A good way to prevent cursing items may be throwing every equipable non-Unique item on the ground and open the wardrobes after.

As some Curses serve as good buffs, one can bring some [[Disenchantment Scroll]]s to the Hut, then deliberately apply the Curses and get rid of the undesired ones.

==Tips & Tricks==

* The [[Golden Candelabrum]] can be stolen either from the leatherworking bailiff's office or from the woodworking bailiff's office during the day or night, or from the pawnshop during the night, at a risk of being asked by the guards.
* A bottle of [[Elven Ice Wine]] can be stolen from the blacksmithing bailiff himself, at the risk of being asked by the guards. If brought to the bailiff, he will be unaware of the fact that the bottle was stolen from him.
* Stealing the Candelabrum from the Pawnshop isn't reccomended due to the larger distance between it and the bailiff's office, and therefore a larger chance of being stopped and checked by the guards.
