Settlements' Situations are introduced in Rags to Riches update. Situations are timed events that affect the Settlement and its surroundings, creating new opportunities and challenges for the player.

__TOC__

Situations are categorized into 3 types: +, Orange, and -. Positive Situations are centered around various boons. Neutral ones come with both beneficial and detrimental effects. And Negative Situations mostly harm the affected Settlement and can cause new - Economical Situations to appear. Each Situation comes with its own special effects like adding new NPCs, altering some of the existing speech and dialogue lines and affecting prices. There are currently 12 Situations: 9 main ones and 3 Economical ones.

Completing Contracts in a given Settlement increases the chance for Positive and Neutral Situations to appear. Failing a Contract increases the chance for Negative Situations to appear. This also applies if the Contract gets completed or failed through the simulated completion of Contracts by other mercenaries.

* Positive and Neutral Situations last for a 7 days before potentially reappearing in another village.
* Negative Situations won’t go away until the player clears a corresponding Contract, then the Negative Situation gets removed some time after completion. This also works if the Contract gets completed through the simulated completion of Contracts by other mercenaries.

Positive Situations
Fair
Fair is organized by Wandering Traders, who offer a large selection of Commodities for affordable prices. In Fair, all markets and general merchants will closed their stalls.

Flea Market is almost similar with Fair situation in other Settlement. But instead of Wandering Traders, Rotten Willow Tavern attracting Wandering Junk Dealers, who sell wide arrange and random items, weapons, ammos, jewelries, junks, with quality ranging from broken to almost pristine with quite steep price. Unique Trait

Bloom greatly boosts the amount of plants and mushrooms in the area while also increasing the demand both for them and medical items. The settlement itself gets a visit from a group of peasant Foragers, who’ll gladly sell any rare plants they’ve collected. In addition, there is a slight chance for rare plants to spawn outside of Caves, Dens, and Hunting Grounds.
* The settlement receives a visit from Foragers
** Rare plants have a chance to appear outside of Caves, Dens, and Hunting Grounds
* In Rotten Willow Tavern, there will be a Forager who sells mostly Marble Truffle
Rut will repopulate all dens around the settlement, increasing animal spawn rates, and attracting Hunters, who are always partial to making a trade.

* Area Wilderness +50%
* Animals are more abundant in the area
* The settlement receives a visit from Hunters

Neutral Situations
Competition
Stems from the presence of rival Mercenaries in the settlement. Competition reduces the number of available contracts, adds negative modifiers to the remaining ones, and narrows the time window for their completion. On the upside, these high difficulty contracts will net you a much bigger reward.
* All available contracts are more challenging.
* The settlement receives a visit from Mercenaries.

Pilgrimage
Pilgrimage is tied to a group of monks who wander between the holy sites of Aldor. They’re capable of granting a lengthy blessing to your character and boost the reputation gain for completing Crypt and Catacombs contracts. At the same time, they put a noticeable strain on local food and medicine prices.

Occult Consilium will bring some Occultists to gather and conduct secret meeting at Rotten Willow Tavern. With the appeareance of Occultists they can provide higher tier magic treaties, and they will very pleased if we can clean and even harvest the near crypt and catacombs for their researches. Unique Trait
Signify the arrival of additional guards. Reinforcements reduces the number of enemies and ambushes around the settlement while also increasing the price of food and alcohol. To offset this, you’ll be able to earn some Reputation simply by killing any remaining enemies around the village.

Settlements
Each Settlement has a fixed layout and a set of NPCs that offer various services. Among the types of settlement are cities, towns, as well as small homesteads.

NPCs
* Provide lore and rumors about the game world.
* NPCs cannot be attacked without consequences (see Crime)
*Some NPCs stay the same between playthroughs (inn and shop keepers, village elders, etc.) while some are randomly generated each new game (peasants, guardsmen, etc.).
*Some NPCs will walk around their town on a fixed path, commonly from their homes to work in a shop or in the fields.
*If an NPC happens to block your path in a town, you can right-click him and select Swap position. This option is only available with town NPCs, you cannot swap positions with enemies or animals.

Activities in Settlements
*You can move freely around a settlement without the risk of being ambushed. Enemies can still follow you into certain locations.
*You can buy and sell items - Weapons, Armor, Jewelry, Consumables and Loot.
* You can obtain Contracts from a Village Elder or Town Official.
*You can save your progress and store your items in a permanent chest at the Inn.
*You cannot freely open Containers present in a settlement, as that is considered stealing and you will be punished. Same goes for wandering into buildings you are not welcome into, and picking up loose items.
*Settlements are one of the few reliable locations where you can refill your Waterskin, always having some type of well or water source present.
*Once you obtain your first caravan following Verren's quest, you can travel between Osbrook and Mannshire by speaking to Verren. This is not a permanent option.
*After travelling to Brynn with Verren, he no longer offers to take you between towns. Instead, Ol' Tott offers transport between certain settlements for a fee.

Reputation
Each settlement belongs to a faction. Depending on your actions, different towns can offer different items for purchase at the town's shops and pay different prices for your items. See Reputation for more info.

More towns are going to be added in future updates - check out the Development roadmap.

Factions
OutdatedFactions are political and military groups spread across Aldor that strive for control. After the death of the last king of Aldor, Etbert, the Grand Magistrate took control as the first governing body, in open rebellion to the regent Queen, but their rule is disputed by many. Each Faction controls several settlements and the nearby area falls under their influence as well.

Parts of the lore depicted below comes from before the Early Access release and might be subject to changes.

Council
The Council is a group of the most influential Aldorian feudal leaders, united around the regent Queen and her young son Verne – allegedly the legal heir.

Inora, King Etbert's last wife, married him several months before his untimely death. This marriage was a complete surprise for the entire court - even the nosiest gossipers were surprised by the news. The sudden death of the monarch which soon followed became the basis for the rumor that Inora had killed her husband – and her son Verne, born after the Etbert’s death, doesn’t have even a single drop of royal blood in his veins.

Nevertheless, there were plenty of people who believed the Queen. Thanks to her natural cunning and diplomacy, she managed to find many influential allies among nobles – who later formed the Council.

The backbone of the Council consists of two seemingly opposing groups. The first is the Etbert’s old guard – the loyalists who held important posts during his reign. They see Verne as the legitimate successor of the dynasty, which they faithfully served all their lives. The second group consists of those who fell into disgrace during the King Etbert’s rule. For them supporting Inora is a reliable way to regain lost influence and reintegrate into the court life.

However, all of them pursue the common goal: to put down the insurrection and destroy the rebels; restore the crown’s power throughout Aldor; and raise Queen to the throne.

Grand Magistrate
The Grand Magistrate is a union of city councils, rebellious aristocrats, as well as artisan and merchant guilds – all fighting for their independence from the royal court.

The roots of the Great Magistrate lie in the long-standing conflict of King Etbert and the city of Brynn. Having come to power, Etbert deprived Brynn of its free city status. This autocratic move earned him enemies among Brynn’s influential families. And all these years they waited for the right moment to restore trampled justice.

After the king died and Inora laid claims to the throne, Brynn’s city council unanimously voted to quit Aldor, if it would be ruled by an impostor. Surely, the burghers were somewhat deceitful – they weren’t going to tolerate any more power over themselves, and Verne’s unclear origin was just a good excuse. Many neighboring settlements, tired of feudal oppression, followed their example. This union was called the Grand Magistrate – since any decisions are discussed by representatives of all the member settlements.

Thanks to the rich treasury and the wide use of mercenaries, the Magistrate fought with the Council on an equal footing, not yielding even an inch of its land. The obtained status quo was finally consolidated after the outbreak of the Crimson Plague – frightened by the unprecedented illness, the parties declared a truce to curb the epidemic.

Taking advantage of the resulting respite, the Magistrate only grew in power, rebuilding everything destroyed by war and sending ambassadors abroad. This gave the Council another significant reason to call the Magistrate traitors – as they say, the Magistrate’s ties with Jacinth elves are much closer than is required just for commerce.

Gray Army
The Gray Army is a folk uprising that has recently taken on an enormous scale. The composition of the Gray Army is quite dissimilar – the majority are peasants and various artisans, but there are other groups as well; former brigands, clerics-in-doubt, broke feudal lords, as well as Magistrate and Council deserters.

For several years, the common people meekly endured all the war; they fought under the banners of the Council and the Magistrate, paid wartime taxes, watched lawlessness and violence, suffered from hunger and disease, and died – by thousands. However, the longer the war went on, the louder the grumbling became.

These moods were skillfully used by Nir – a man of unknown origin, and therefore even more mysterious and frightening. A former monk; runaway slave; criminal on the run; feudal lord, who lost his mind after losing his title – there are so many rumors regarding his possible past, the safest bet is not to believe any of them.

The philosophy of the movement is quite confusing and controversial – mainly because only Nir himself grasps it fully. The rest only has to interpret the scattered fragments of his statements – the so-called Words. The Gray Army considers immoderation and incontinence in all its manifestations to be the most important cause of all evil. Nir believes that the ability to find and keep a fine line is paramount, and only in this way people can protect themselves from corruption.

Due to the multiplicity and desperate courage, the Gray Army managed to occupy numerous territories, having won several settlements from the Council and the Magistrate. Now the Army is looking forward to the end of the truce – to finally finish off all those who deny their dogmas.

Unaligned Settlements & Factions
There are various smaller, independent locations and factions not beholdent to, or mostly separate from, any of the major faction. These include:

*The Rotten Willow Tavern

Interesting Facts
* Grey army draws heavily from the Hussites, German Peasants' War and Savonarola's millenarianism.
Dual Wielding is the mechanic allowing to use two one-handed weapons simultaneously. For a skill tree, visit Dual Wielding (skill tree).

__TOC__

Dual Wielding Basics
Dual Wielding requires no special training. To start Dual Wielding, simply equip a one-handed weapon into one of your weapon slots, then add another one-handed weapon into the other weapon slot.
* You can mix and match freely - two weapons of the same type, two weapons of a different type, two shields, or even two one-handed tools (ie. Crowbars).
* Equipping a one-handed weapon and a shield doesn't count as Dual Wielding.
* Equipping a Bow or a Crossbow with Ammunition or with Quivers doesn't count as Dual Wielding.
* You cannot dual wield two-handed weapons in any way.

Effects of Dual Wielding
Upon equipping a second weapon, your character will receive the Dual Wielding Penalty, a list of these negative bonuses:
<b>
Main Hand Efficiency         -25%
Off-Hand Efficiency          -50%
Cooldown Duration            +15%
Fumble Chance                +5%
</b>
This penalty is always active and cannot be removed in any way until you stop Dual Wielding.

Attribute Values
The Attributes section of your Character screen will start displaying two values on most of your Combat attributes (see image).

This is because the game handles bonuses from Weapons on a per-weapon basis. For example, when Dual Wielding a Footman Sword and a War Flail, only the Footman Sword will get the Accuracy bonus, while only the War Flail will get the Accuracy penalty.

Hand Efficiency
The values you gain from the weapons are modified by your Hand Efficiency. The Main Hand Efficiency and Off-Hand Efficiency attributes affect how well you can handle your weapons while Dual Wielding, adjusting the damage and all offensive bonuses from the weapon wielded in the respective weapon slot. Both Hand Efficiency attributes start at 100%.

When wielding only a single weapon, your Main Hand Efficiency is at 100%, which is why wielding one Footman Sword will give you exactly +3% Accuracy.<br>But Dual Wielding two Footman Swords will not give you +6% Accuracy as you might expect. Instead, it's calculated like this:
* Main Hand: +3% Accuracy * 75% Main Hand Efficiency (the DW Penalty) = +2.25% Accuracy for the Main Hand.
* Off-Hand: +3% Accuracy * 50% Off-Hand Efficiency (the DW Penalty) = +1.5% Accuracy for the Off-Hand.

Similarly, if you increased your Main Hand Efficiency to 150%, a Footman Sword in your Main Hand would instead give you +4.5% Accuracy:
* +3% Accuracy * 150% Main Hand Efficiency = 4.5% Accuracy.

Finally, penalties on Weapons are also affected in the same way - using a War Flail in your Off-Hand will give you smaller Accuracy penalty:
* -5% Accuracy * 50% Off-Hand Efficiency (the DW Penalty) = -2.5% Accuracy.

Attributes that are not separated into the per-weapon basis are unaffected by Hand Efficiency. For example, Footman Sword will always give you +2% Block Chance and +10% Skills Energy Cost penalty, regardless of your Hand Efficiency values or the slot where you wield your Footman Sword.

Skill bonuses vs. Dual Wielding
All attribute bonuses from skills, be it active or passive, are applied to both wielded weapons. Bonuses from skills are unaffected by your Hands Efficiency attributes. Examples:
* The Stance-based skill Hammer and Anvil from the Mace skill tree will add its bonuses to both your weapons, as long as one of your weapons is a Mace.
* The active skill Seize the Initiative from the Combat Mastery skill tree will add its bonuses to both your weapons.
* The passive skill Feed the Flames from Pyromancy skill tree will add its +3% Accuracy bonus to both your weapons.
* The passive skill Concussion from the Mace skill tree will add +5% Weapon damage bonus to both your weapons, as long as one of your weapons is a Mace.
* However, the Concussion's effect "Critical hits with maces apply their target with -15% Control Resistance for 3 turns." will only work when you deliver a critical hit with your Mace.
* The passive skill Honed Edge will only add bonus Bleed Chance when you attack or use an ability that uses your Sword. But the Bleed Chance bonus will then be applied to both your weapons.

Finally, penalties on Weapons are also affected in the same way - using a War Flail in your Off-Hand will give you smaller Accuracy penalty:
* -5% Accuracy * 50% Off-Hand Efficiency (the DW Penalty) = -2.5% Accuracy.

<b>
Main Hand Efficiency         -25%
Fumble Chance                +5%
</b>

* Off-Hand: +3% Accuracy * 50% Off-Hand Efficiency (the DW Penalty) = +1.5% Accuracy for the Off-Hand.

Similarly, if you increased your Main Hand Efficiency to 150%, a Footman Sword in your Main Hand would instead give you +4.5% Accuracy:
* +3% Accuracy * 150% Main Hand Efficiency = 4.5% Accuracy.

Finally, penalties on Weapons are also affected in the same way - using a War Flail in your Off-Hand will give you smaller Accuracy penalty:
* -5% Accuracy * 50% Off-Hand Efficiency (the DW Penalty) = -2.5% Accuracy.
For example, Footman Sword will always give you +2% Block Chance and +10% Skills Energy Cost penalty, regardless of your Hand Efficiency values or the slot where you wield your Footman Sword.

Wayfinder:

Reputation is a measure of your acceptance by the people. Mercenaries outside of the times of war were often happy to steal and kill in order to survive, so it's no surprise that the locals view them with suspicion. Each village keeps track of your deeds in the form of reputation and acts accordingly.

Reputation types
There are currently two reputation types:
* Faction reputation
* Settlement reputation

You can access the information about reputation by opening your Journal (press J key) and switching to the Reputation tab.
Faction & Settlement reputation
There is currently very little information regarding Faction reputation. Currently, only reputation within a given Settlement has any effect on gameplay.

The Reputation Tab lists the following Factions and their Settlements:
* Magistrate
**Osbrook
**Mannshire
**Brynn
**Forholt
* Council
**Aldwynn
**Denbrie
**Skonfert
**Kord
* Gray Army
**Maen
**Eeders
**Yostwayne
**Ratten
* Other
**Rotten Willow Tavern
**House of the Azure Thread
**Vanguard
**New Guild

Currently, the entirety of the Global Map is in the area controlled by the Grand Magistrate. The only in-game mention of Faction reputation is on the Heraldic Note. Using the Heraldic Note instantly awards 200 reputation points with all Settlements that belong to the Magistrate.
Improving reputation
Reputation changes through interacting with NPCs in their respective Settlements.

Currently there are 6 reputation levels:
* Hatred - 0
* Resentment - 1000
* Neutrality - 2000
* Benevolence - 3000
* Amity - 5000
* Respect - 7000

All starting characters begin at Neutrality with 2500 points. To reach Benevolence, two completed contracts are required. The reputation levels are indicated in the Reputation Tab by the colored progress bar, with different color for every reputation level. The reputation points are capped at 9000.

* Finishing a Contract in time will increase reputation with the settlement, and also slightly raise reputation (20% worth of a finished contract's reward) with other settlements of the same Faction, up to the level of Benevolence.
* Failing to finish a contract from the village elders in time will decrease reputation with the settlement.
*The amount of reputation gained depends on the contract and its associated Settlement. Contracts in Brynn reward more reputation than those in Osbrook.
* Certain NPC dialogue options can increase or decrease reputation when chosen.
*Reputation with the Rotten Willow Tavern can only be increased by interacting with L'Owcrey

Reputation effects
Reputation affects buy and sell prices for all shops in the respective Settlement and the quality and variety of available items. An item's level is it's equivalent tier; for example, if you want to buy a Wizard Staff, you need to reach Respect in Mannshire before it starts to appearing at the blacksmith.

The following table shows how reputation affects the pricing and item level bonuses:

Wayfinder: Brynn item levels clarified

Reputation is a measure of your acceptance by the people. Mercenaries outside of the times of war were often happy to steal and kill in order to survive, so it's no surprise that the locals view them with suspicion. Each village keeps track of your deeds in the form of reputation and acts accordingly.

Reputation types
There are currently two reputation types:
* Faction reputation
* Settlement reputation

* Magistrate
**Osbrook
**Mannshire
**Brynn
**Forholt
* Council
**Aldwynn
**Denbrie
**Skonfert
**Kord
* Gray Army
**Maen
**Eeders
**Yostwayne
**Ratten
* Other
**Rotten Willow Tavern
**House of the Azure Thread
**Vanguard
**New Guild

Currently, the entirety of the Global Map is in the area controlled by the Grand Magistrate. The only in-game mention of Faction reputation is on the Heraldic Note. Using the Heraldic Note instantly awards 200 reputation points with all Settlements that belong to the Magistrate.
Improving reputation
Reputation changes through interacting with NPCs in their respective Settlements.

Currently there are 6 reputation levels:
* Hatred - 0
* Resentment - 1000
* Neutrality - 2000
* Benevolence - 3000
* Amity - 5000
* Respect - 7000

Wayfinder: Removed the speculation about the exact future map size as it was based on a very rough and outdated draft shared a long time ago on Discord

The Global Map is the overworld map of Stoneshard, accesed via the [M] key.
When you start a new game, your map will be randomly generated and obscured by a fog of war, and only once tiles are visited they will be revealed on the main map.
You will be able to purchase a paper map to see some limited part of the global map, but it will not reveal those tiles on the global map directly; thus they will still have to be explored.
The player is able to travel around Aldor by foot, by paying a fee to a travelling cart (such as Ol' Tott) or, in the future, by using the caravan.

You can ask NPCs for rumors, and sometimes certain points of interest will be revealed on your map with a ? icon. You can also encounter the some points of interest directly by wandering on the map, such as the Witch's Hut or the Ruined Manor.

Travelling by foot may lead you into some random events and encounters, such as wolf attacks or ambushes.

Certain places on the global map are anchored on the same tiles (settlements and some PoIs), but everything else such as roads, rivers, lakes, PoIs and dungeons are placed and connected randomly, and thus may appear anywhere on your map - therefore each player's map will look and play slightly differently.

The current size of the map is 38x35 tiles. For now, it includes the Brynn March with one city (Brynn) and two villages (Osbrook & Mannshire) as well as other locations.

<li style="display: inline-block;">  </li>

__TOC__

Factions
Factions are political and military groups spread across Aldor that strive for control.

*Skonfert

Resting is how your character replenishes his health and energy. Resting is also incorporated into the Save System.

Stoneshard uses a unique save system. For each character you start a New Game with, you can have up to two save slots. Game automatically overwrites your older save when you create a new save - for example you can have one save in town and another before a dungeon. Each character you start a New Game with will be kept as a separate save with its own randomized NPCs, progress and saved decisions. If you create two different Arnas for example, you can have an Arna who specializes in Greatswords and focuses on Contracts, and another Arna who favors Maces and Shields and prefers hunting and destroying undead.

Saving your progress
To save your progress, your character needs to sleep. To sleep, you have to find a bed first, you cannot sleep on the ground.

Available beds:
* Town Inns in Osbrook, Mannshire and Brynn
* Roadside Inns - Rotten Willow Tavern and Ralph & Sons Inn
* All randomly spawned Camps
* Certain Unique Points of Interest also have Beds (for example Ruined Manor)
* Temporary bed created by using a Bedroll

To sleep at an Inn, you first need to pay the local innkeeper. Sleeping at camps or Unique POIs is free. Bedroll cost varies depending on your reputation with a given Town.

Exiting the game
Since the 0.7.0.0 CIty of Gold update, the game is automatically saved upon pressing the "Save and exit" button in game menu. This quicksave was only added to cover situations where the player needs to turn off the device "right now". Quicksave is deleted immediately after loading. Quicksave does not overwrite your two standard save slots, instead it appears as a third save.

Before this update, player had to rest somewhere to save their progress.

Standard mode and Permadeath mode
There are currently two game modes available: Standard and Permadeath. The only difference is in the amount of lives you have - infinite lives in Standard and one life in Permadeath. You can select the Permadeath mode with a checkbox when you start a New Game. Permadeath mode is also saved on a per-character basis, so you can have one Jorgrim in Standard mode and another Jorgrim in Permadeath mode.

* If you die in the Standard mode, the game will automatically load your last save point. Anything you did after the save point is lost, but you can continue and try again.
* If you die in the Permadeath mode, the game will delete your save and you will not be able to continue to play your character.

Fatigue
Fatigue is a system that limits for how long can you keep going.

Fatigue works similarly to other Health mechanics: it can range from 0 to 100% and is generated by a variety of actions:

* Traversing tiles
* Attacking
* Blocking and dodging
* Using skills (Fatigue Gain* is 1.5% of their Energy Cost) and casting spells (Fatigue Gain* is 2.5% of their Energy Cost)

Fatigue Gain - Affects the rate of gaining Fatigue.
The rate of Fatigue Gain is tied to a couple other stats: first of all, there’s Fatigue Resistance, which can be both negative and positive. Secondly, Max Energy also plays a big role - the higher it is, the longer it will be before your character gets tired.

Each percent of Fatigue lowers Max Energy Threshold by 0.75%. When reaching certain levels, it produces the following negative effects:

* 25%: Weariness
* 50%: Tiredness
* 75%: Exhaustion

There are many ways to combat Fatigue:
* The effect of Vigor, which is acquired after a good night’s sleep or by using some consumables (such as Elven Mud). It reduces Fatigue Gain and gradually lowers already existing Fatigue.
* Many exquisite foods, which can be bought in Brynn taverns and grocery shops, can either alleviate Fatigue or reduce Fatigue Gain.
* Some stimulant drugs might help you stay awake longer than usual: Nikkaf has a noticeable effect on Fatigue Gain, and Al’qud slowly reduces Fatigue every turn.
* Rest Mode can provide a moment of respite after a fight.
* And finally, the most obvious method - sleeping. Each hour of sleep significantly lowers Fatigue, which makes Bedrolls and distant camps all the more important when embarking on a long journey. Resting in more expensive taverns also has a greater restorative effect.

Effects of Sleeping
Each time you sleep in bed, the time skips forward for the selected amount of hours. While you sleep, the world around you doesn't move, but certain scripted events do happen. For example, the townsfolk will go to their homes or back to their shops depending on the time you wake up. This mechanic tries to mimic how waiting X amount of time works in other games, for example The Elder Scrolls series.

Your needs will also keep accumulating during sleep, so you will be hungry and thirsty after a long sleep, hunger being prevalent. And your fatigue also will lower.

There are a list of Brynn taverns and other PoI's with respective information about how good they are at reducing Fatigue and etc.
Maximum sleep duration
Every hour of staying awake increase the maximum sleep duration by one hour, capping at 8 possible hours of sleep. Each 5% Fatigue additionally increases this number by one hour. This means that after 8 hours of activity you’ll be able to sleep for 8 hours, and if your character is also completely exhausted, they’ll be able to stay in bed for up to 28 hours.

Sleeping in some beds also applies the Vigorous buff, with duration depending on how long have you slept and if you have slept recently.

Rest Mode
Another form of Resting your character is the Rest Mode, which replenishes your Health and Energy and lowers your Fatigue at an accelerated rate by making turns pass faster. Rest Mode cannot be used to Save the game. For more info about Rest Mode, see Combat_Formulas#Rest_Mode.
Enemies of a certain type cooperate together (for example, Wolves form packs), but they may not cooperate with enemies of a different type (for example, Wolves and Bandits will attack each other).
