( . . . )##To my most esteemed readers, I have a piece of advice: if you ever find yourself in Ahjat, do not get into verbal spats with the Maafs. According to their local customs, any Maaf has a right to defend his honor in a duel, and you can never know what he will perceive as an offence. Once the situation escalates, your chances will become, let's be honest, rather slim - Maafs are unrivaled in combat.##Not long ago I observed one of such duels. A young and brash elf had a lot to say about the lineage of some Maaf. Before the duel commenced, all these insults were loudly narrated to the joy of the crowd, bringing the Maaf to the boiling point. The moment a piece of crimson cloth touched the arena sand, he charged at his opponent, a polehammer at the ready.##I heard the elf was supposed to be a talented fencer, but that day luck wasn't on his side. The very first strike brought him to his knees. For a few moments he tried to reach for his sabre, confused and disoriented, but it was already too late. The Maaf lowered his hammer on the elf's skull in one steady motion, thus concluding the fight. The crowd cheered as the once impudent duelist's body was being carried away from the arena - a valuable lesson to those who don't know when to keep their mouth shut...##( . . . )
