It offers no value unless carried in the cloak slot, since it cant be carried in inventory while having items inside.
Opening the backpack takes a turn, so it is not advisable to keep any items you may need to use in combat stored within it.

The Herbalist Bag uses 6 devoted 1x2 "Bottle" slots on the top row that can be used for a variety of different things including,
- All types of Alcohol
- Bottles of Oil
- Several Drugs
- Empty Glass Bottles
- Glass Bottles full of Water or Milk
- Potions
This Bag also uses 6 devoted 1x2 "Herb" slots which are more limited and can hold,
Tips
The Herbalist Bag can be very useful for survival especially in the early and mid game. This is achieved by stocking food, water, and utility items in larger amounts than other bags found at the time.
It can hold several bottles of water or oil in the bottle slots for both hydration, fire suppression, and establishing Electricity or Fire damage vulnerability. Lentil plants can be stored in the herb slots for emergency rations. Alternatively Mindwort can be carried to boost sanity and Henbane can be used before a fight to give you an edge in combat. Finally, the free space can be used to hold a large amount of medical supplies like Splints, Antitoxin, Herbal Extract, leeches, or other small items.
With the v0.9.3.0 "Of Beasts & Sages" update, the herbalist bag did get slightly more valuable. Many of the newly added rare plants are Herbs and as such can be placed in the satchel just like any of the common ones.
