Verren's Ring was a special reward for players that subscribed to the Stoneshard newsletter prior to the day of release into Early Access on Steam. The subscribed users received this letter from Verren:

Hey, mercenary!

How’s your fighting spirit, ready to get to work? We’re starting with this contract in just a day, so I hope you receive this letter on your way to Osbrook. I’ll meet you at the usual spot – the Black Boar tavern. I’ll give you the details there. And I’ve got to tell you, it’s a major contract, so you should come well-prepared, there’s a long road ahead of us.

By the way, about the ring… It has the most curious history, but these are not the times to share it in a letter. Both the Council and the Magistrate have eyes and ears everywhere… I’ll spare you the story until we arrive at my house in Brynn. For now, keep this:

Included was a DLC key that unlocked Verren's Ring in-game. After creating your character, if you talked to Verren again, he would give you his ring. With patch 0.5.8.6 (Trollslayer Update) the DLC key isn't required anymore - Verren's Ring can now be acquired simply by talking to Verren. The letter is now also considered non-canon to the game's story.

Verren informs the player that his ring should be kept safe as it will come handy later. Wearing the ring when talking to Skinflint Homs in Brynn will trigger a special dialogue and Skinflint will then offer price discounts for both his goods and services.
